Most niches can be profitable, at least to some extent. Basically, if other people are interested in the niche, and products are available to promote, you have a chance of making sales. However, you can spend a lot of time trying various niches before you find one that makes you a decent amount of money, and although some ‘failure’ is pretty much inevitable, there are some things you can consider before choosing your niche, to increase your chances of success. Here are three top considerations for choosing a niche for affiliate marketing:
Your Level of Interest & Expertise
Firstly, think about how interested you are in the subject, and how much you know about it. Some people find that they are more motivated to work, and produce higher quality work, when they are working within a niche that they are passionate about, or at least interested in to some degree. Others are motivated purely by the prospect of making money, and aren’t concerned with the topic at all. So ask yourself if having an interest in the topic you’re researching and writing about is important to you or not.
Consider also how much you know about the niche. If you’re interested in it already, the chances you are know quite a lot, or you may even be an expert – in which case you’ll be more convincing when you’re writing about the subject. If you want to choose a niche that you don’t know much about, you can still succeed, but will need to spend more time researching it first. So if you want to get the quickest possible results, choose a niche where you have some knowledge to begin with.
How Profitable Is It?
A second important consideration is how much demand there is in the niche, as this will have a strong influence on your profits. It is all very well choosing a niche where you love the subject and have lots of knowledge, but if there isn’t a market to support it, you won’t make much (if any) money. By all means write about your interests, but if money making is important to you, check that the topic is popular with others too. Also, ensure that affiliate products are available to promote (if not, you could consider creating your own if you believe there is a demand), and that the market is one where people are willing and able to spend. Don’t choose a niche where most of your audience are freebie-seekers or flat broke!
How Competitive Is It?
Thirdly, you’ll need to be aware of the competition in your chosen niche. Many people shy away from competitive niches, believing that it will be too difficult to get a foothold. If you’re totally new to affiliate marketing, it’s a good idea to choose less competitive niches for your first few campaigns, so you can gain experience and get results without having to worry about beating huge competition from others. However, when you have some experience, competitive niches can be worth entering, simply because lots of competition means that lots of money is being made.
The trick with competitive niches is firstly to identify and target smaller sub-niches within the industry; for example, in the weight loss niche, you might target middle aged men who are trying to lose belly fat – rather than everyone who is trying to lose weight. You also need to see what your competitors are doing – which keywords they’re ranking for, how many backlinks they have, which products they’re promoting etc. You’ll often find that the competition isn’t as strong as it first appears and that by building a better campaign, you can outrank them.
